A nutritionist from the Department of Nutritional Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia, dr. Sri Sukmaniah, MSc, SpGK, said tempe contains fiber and nutrients that are easily digested food, so good for weaning food for children in six months or after. Fiber which is found in tempe is very good for preventing constipation in infants, which often happens when giving complementary foods.
She also explained that tempe yeast had digested soybeans cell wall that are hard to be soft so that the protein and other nutrients in tempe easily absorbed by body.
In addition, she said that nitrogen, which is part of the essential amino acids, can be digested better so that the body get more benefits from tempe. Moreover, she added, tempe also contain vitamin B12 that is needed by the body, especially the nerves.
